April 13, 2020-

Hello parents and students,

As a part of the continuing distance learning process, we are emailing you an update on the next step being taken by the teachers and staff at Vaughan Elementary.

The 4th and 5th grade teachers have created an activity board for students to complete this week. It can be accessed through Ms. Pennypacker’s or Mr. Sullivan’s webpage. We encourage all students and parents to look at the activity board and spend about one hour each day completing the given activities. For example, you would work on the reading activity for an hour on Monday and the math activity for an hour on Wednesday. In addition to the activity, there are additional supports and resources listed for students. Also, there are weekly activities students can complete for the different Specials Blocks. Teachers will create new activity boards with new activities each week. You will need to access these activity boards weekly so students can continue to review curriculum and stay engaged in distance learning by completing the provided activities.

Along with the activity board, we will be holding online office hours each week when students or parents can email us with any questions, concerns, or assistance that is needed. The online office hours for Ms. Pennypacker are on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:30, and for Mr. Sullivan on Tuesdays from 11:30-12:30. Office hours this week will only be held through emails, but may involve other online contact in the future weeks.

If you have not been able to access Clever, please let either Ms. Pennypacker or Mr. Sullivan know as soon as possible. A lot of the online activities will require students to login using Clever, so it is important that students be able to access that website.

We are also including an administration message being sent out to all Vaughan families through various contact mediums.

Please reach out to both of us if you have any questions or concerns about the learning boards or Clever. We are very excited to start these learning boards. Stay safe and we miss you!

Hi Ms. Pennypacker's  and Mr. Sullivan's 4th and 5th grade students and families! :)

Get ready, get set, and get ready to go for the week of April 13, 2020. We will be spending that week practicing how we will be in touch with each other for a schedule, directions for instruction, and communication! We have activities planned for each of our subject areas that students can work on. More information on that to come later. Here's what I would like you to do before then:

1) Be able to access my website page.  Go to the Vaughan School Website. Click "Class Pages" that runs across the top of the page. Click on "4th and 5th Grade LA and Social Studies". Click on my name "Meredith Pennypacker." It will take you to my web page. Take the time to check out the links on the page. For Mr. Sullivan's web page, follow the same directions above, but click on "4th and 5th Grade Math and Science" and then click on his name.
2) Be able to access Clever. Go to the Vaughan School Website.  Click on Technology Help.  On the left side of the page, click on "How to Find Clever." It is very important that you get onto Clever since a lot of the activities will be done through there. If you cannot access Clever, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I have your usernames and can give you the link to reset your password.
3) Be able to access your class Dojo and your email.  Invites have been sent to all the grown ups to ensure contact information.  I have sent out an email and Dojo message last week asking for your response. Thank you, thankyou, thank you to all the grown ups that have responded! This will be an important point of contact with both parents and students.

I miss you, miss you, and miss you more!  If you need ANY help with any thing, please let me know!

April 3, 2020-

Good afternoon parents!

I hope you and your family have been healthy and safe. It's crazy to think that today would have been our last day of school before spring break! Since next week would have been our spring the county will continue to uphold that for staff and students. However, if you or your child needs anything please reach out to us!

Additionally, as new guidelines, resources, and activities come out it is important that you are checking your email, ParentVue, ClassDojo, and our class websites. Mr. Sullivan and I are asking for all parents to please respond to this email so we know you are receiving these messages from us. Mr. Sullivan is copied on this email and we would appreciate if you could please reply to the both of us.This exact message is being shared on ClassDojo and would appreciate if you could please respond to that message too. Again, this is to make sure that we are able to get in contact with you on any updates regarding distance learning.

For resources, updates, and activities please make sure you are checking Mr. Sullivan's and my class pages. Mr. Sullivan's class page has information regarding math and science while my website has information for reading and social studies. See the links below for our websites. Please feel free to reach out to either one of us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you! Stay safe!

March 30, 2020-

Good afternoon parents and students!

I hope you all are staying safe and indoors! Our guidance from the county is still to not provide any new instruction or graded assignments. However, we can provide optional resources to help with learning at home.

When we were in school, your child was able to access a bunch of different applications through a website called Clever. This is a great online learning resource that students can use to access applications, such as BrainPop, Newsela, PebbleGo, and more. Students are able to access Clever from home using the kindle that was sent home with them or a device that you have at home. I will be sending an email and ClassDojo message shortly with your child's back-up code to log on. Please follow all instructions on that email to help your child access these resources. You can access Clever by visiting my class website and going under "Useful Links."

We will contact you all with any new information as it becomes available. Please stay up to date on all resources and new information by checking out our class pages. If you have any questions or want additional resources, please feel free to reach out to myself, Mr. Sullivan, or Ms. Crockett. Thank you for your patience and support at home!

March 23, 2020 -

Dear parents and students,

Today we received the devastating news that we will not be returning to school for the rest of the school year due to Covid-19 (coronavirus). I am just as upset, confused, and heartbroken as most of you are. Our school year was supposed to be filled with so much more fun, learning, and memories. I know that this is a lot to process for both parents and students.

Parents, I will do my best to update you on any new information that comes out. I have updated our class website to include more online resources for students to use at home. Most of these resources can be accessed through the Kindle that was sent home with your child on March 13. However, most of these resources can be accessed from any device you have at home. These resources are optional and are to be used to practice skills already taught during the school year. If you would like any additional resources or help, please feel free to reach out to me. Additionally, if you have not joined ClassDojo yet, please look out for an email shortly asking you to join. This is another great resource that you can use to stay in contact with me. You can access our class website by clicking this link:   https://vaughanes.pwcs.edu/class_pages/fourth_and_fifth_grade_l_a_and_social_studies/meredith_pennypacker

To my awesome students, I am so sorry that our time together got cut short. I want you to know that I am so proud of each and every one of you. You all have accomplished so much and I know you will continue to do so! I am going to miss you all so much!

Again, if you or your child need anything or have questions please email or Dojo message me. I am here to help in any way that I can! I will contact you all once any new information and guidance is released by the Virginia Department of Education and PWCS. Thank you for being patient as we try to understand our next steps.

March 16, 2020 -

Good afternoon 4th and 5th grade parents!

Things sure have been crazy the past couple of days! I am emailing you all to give you some information on how you can support your child from home if you choose to do so.

Please make sure that your child continues to read 30 minutes each night. On Friday, students who attended school were given books as well as their kindle to take home during the break. Students can use the apps that are on the kindles, such as Epic, Kahoot, or Clever. If they were not at school on Friday and have access to the internet your child can still access these websites if they are able to use another device.

I will be posting information for reading and social studies on our class web page. On this page, you can find updates, resources, and links to some apps that students can use during this break. This is just an option for right now if you wish to support your child at home. Mr. Sullivan's web page is not working at this time, so if you are looking for resources for math and science please visit any other math and science teacher's page. Please check the Vaughan website frequently for updates and more.

Here is our class page: https://vaughanes.pwcs.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=411869&pageId=16353104

During this time, please make sure that you check ParentVUE, email, Class Dojo, and our class webpage for updates. If you have any questions or concerns about how to support your child from home during this time, please reach out to me at any time!

Stay healthy and safe!
Ms. Pennypacker
